DGM files 13 criminal charges against those accused of migrant smuggling.

SANTO DOMINGO.- In April, the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) filed 13 criminal charges for migrant smuggling, in cases involving 114 foreigners that were discovered in different parts of the country.

The official entity also reported that as a result of these initiatives, the judicial authorities applied coercive measures to the accused, which entail preventive detention (3), financial guarantee and periodic presentation (4), periodic presentation (1) and there are 9 pending a ruling.

Of these cases, three occurred in Jimaní, two in Independencia province, two in Barahona, one in Valverde, and the same number in San Pedro de Macorís, Bani, Bahoruco, San Juan de la Maguana, and Elías Piña.

The procedures were carried out by the Legal Department of the agency that manages human mobility, as part of strengthening the institutional structure and coordinating with other agencies linked to national security to detect and combat immigration violations.

The DGM's legal department also processed two forgery charges in Santo Domingo Oeste, against one defendant and three foreigners, and another case in Higuey against one defendant and one foreigner. One person was charged with extortion in the National District, and another person was charged with assault with beatings and wounds in Bávaro.

The DGM warned that it will continue its actions against those caught violating immigration laws, bringing them before the courts and imposing the appropriate sanctions, depending on the violation.
