The DGM and business leaders from Elías Piña agree to apply a fee for goods crossing from Haiti.

ELÍAS PIÑA.- The General Directorate of Immigration (DGM) agreed with community members and merchants here to implement, starting next May, the adjustment and standardization of the institution's immigration control services, emphasizing the border crossing point for vehicles.

This adjustment, which applies to border crossings as well as ports, airports, and all points where the DGM provides services to users, was created by Resolution No. DGM-006 of 2023, but its implementation had been delayed due to the effects of the recent Covid-19 pandemic.

The start of its implementation began to generate controversy among business owners in this area and on the Haitian side, so a high-level commission from the DGM, headed by its head, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester, ARD, met with local sectors and reached an agreement that it would begin to be implemented on May 1st.

As part of the agreement, a fee was established for each vehicle crossing the border.

Dominican merchants also pledged to continue negotiations with their Haitian counterparts to try to resolve the problems affecting trade flows in the region. They also discussed the situation resulting from Haitian authorities imposing a ban on the entry of international goods from the Dominican Republic.

The extension granted by the DGM will give merchants sufficient time to reach an agreement that will allow for a more fluid and orderly flow of goods.

The DGM reiterated its willingness to build consensus with community members and business leaders and advocated for definitive solutions that promote the economic stability of the area.

Also present at the meeting were Representative Carlos Morillo, representatives of the Comendador Merchants and Exporters Association, as well as Brigadier General Juan Carlos Vicente Pérez, FARD (FARD), and Colonel Manuel Antonio Carrasco, directors of Immigration Intelligence and Immigration Control, respectively, of the DGM.
