General Migration Law 285 – 04 turns 20 years old.
The immigration law was promulgated by former President Hipólito Mejía. Implementing regulations were created 7 years later.
Santo Domingo. _ Since 2004, the Dominican Republic has had a general immigration law, under number 285 of 2004, which updated everything related to immigration policy in the country.
Previously, in Dominican territory, Law number 95 of 1939 was applied, created by President Jacinto Peynado, during the tyranny of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, the application regulations were under decree 279 of the month of May, one month after the promulgation, which was in April of that same year, and lasted 65 years.
The current Law 285 - 04 was promulgated by former President Hipólito Mejía, on August 15, 2004, at that time the Senate was chaired by Jesús Vásquez Martínez, representative of María Trinidad Sánchez and today Minister of the Interior and Police, and the Chamber of Deputies was headed by Alfredo Pacheco, who currently holds the same position.
During the administration of President Luis Abinader and in the last two years, under the direction of Venancio Alcántara in the General Directorate of Migration, the application of the law has been strict.
