Judge orders preventive detention for the manager of the hotel where 83 foreigners were detained in Montecristi

The DGM will continue to bring to justice anyone who acts against Law 285-04.

MONTECRISTI. – The Permanent Attention Court of the province of Montecristi ordered preventive detention for a period of three months to Diógenes Rafael Vásquez, who manages and represents the La Altagracia Hotel in this city, where 83 Haitian nationals were staying after being detained for entering Dominican territory without complying with immigration regulations.

The information was provided by the General Directorate of Immigration (DGM) whose inspectors acted together with personnel from the Dominican Republic Army when they detected the presence of the foreigners in the aforementioned hotel in this city. The preventive detention was ordered by magistrate Abierka Antonia Gómez.

This decision, explained the DGM, “sets an important precedent” because instead of the more usual measures of periodic presentation or financial guarantee, a measure of “greater severity” was dictated.

With this decision, says the DGM, the Public Prosecutor's Office sends "an exemplary message to those who participate in the illicit trafficking of migrants, reaffirming the commitment of the authorities to enforce the General Migration Law 285-04."

"This measure represents an effort to strengthen immigration control with greater emphasis on the border area and to more firmly sanction acts that violate the country's legal provisions," said a statement from the DGM.

The interdiction operation at the La Altagracia Hotel was carried out under the coordination of the Dominican Republic Army and together with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the DGM explained.
