Santo Domingo. _ The Directorate General of Migration (DGM) reported that a Canadian citizen recently detained in the Bávaro area for being sought by the judicial authorities of his country is in the process of being deported.
The agency that regulates and regulates migration flows at a national level explained that Eric Belhumeur is facing legal proceedings in Canada for sexual abuse of a minor linked to his ex-wife, both of that nationality.
Belhumeur was detained in his country and released on parole with the commitment to surrender his passport and not leave the limits of his territorial jurisdiction, but he violated that agreement and traveled to the Dominican Republic on December 24, 2019, where he has remained illegally.
The Tourist Police detained him in Friusa and he was referred to the DGM, where he initially voluntarily agreed to be repatriated, a measure that was to be executed on 19-01-2025 in accordance with the protocols and regulations of Law 285-04 and its execution was not possible because his passport was blocked.
A court in San Cristóbal issued an order for the Canadian to be released, without considering the evidence or proof that makes him a target of justice in his country and the fact that he has been living illegally in the Dominican Republic for 5 years; a decision that has been the subject of an appeal.
The DGM reported that the foreigner has a deportation order for being in an irregular immigration status and that due to the seriousness of the pending case, they are making arrangements with the Canadian Embassy in the country to execute it.
