SANTO DOMINGO.- The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) yesterday detained 996 Haitian nationals with irregular immigration status and deported another 527, as a result of interdiction operations carried out in the country.
The actions of DGM units indicate that 183 illegal aliens were detained in Greater Santo Domingo; 8 in Santiago de los Caballeros; 44 in Mao/Santiago Rodríguez; 5 in Barahona; 158 in Puerto Plata; and 3 in Montecristi.
As part of the inter-institutional collaboration implemented by the agency, the Dominican Army also detained 427 people, the Specialized Corps for Land Border Security detained 139, and the National Police detained 29. The Ministry of Defense, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Digeset, Ciutran, and other state security agencies also participated in the efforts.
The DGM’s work carried out yesterday also includes the repatriation of illegal immigrants through the Dajabón binational point (260 people), Elías Piña (208), Jimaní (39), and Pedernales (20). These illegal immigrants are handed over to Haitian immigration authorities after having been in the DGM’s detention centers for irregular immigrants in various parts of the country, including the border zone, where their biometric data and fingerprints are taken, and they are legally vetted.
The DGM’s actions are carried out in compliance with protocols that guarantee the prerogatives and dignity of individuals, as well as respect for the dignity and physical and health safety of women, pregnant women, the elderly, and minors.
