The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) reported that it ordered security to be reinforced at the Haina Vacation Center as a preventive measure in response to a protest initiated by several prisoners who demanded to be immediately repatriated to their country of origin.
“Security measures were necessary to deter the detainees and prevent their noisy protests from creating a complex situation,” the institution explained.
At the Haina detention centre, the DGM says, foreigners detained for repatriation because they are not authorised to remain in the country receive respectful treatment of their rights as persons.
“The alert prompted the support of additional military personnel from the ERD, ARD, FARD, PN, including FARD helicopters and ARD speedboats, as well as personnel from the Armed Forces and the Police at the service of the institution. It was a preventive and deterrent measure designed to avoid greater evils,” the institution highlights.
The DGM emphasizes that “Dominicans, governments of countries in the region and international organizations that monitor migration issues can be sure that this is an institution that acts in compliance with the rights of people detained for their irregular stay in the Dominican Republic.”
The Haina Vacation Center is under the control of the DGM, because it is used to detain foreigners who remain in Dominican territory without having the authorization established by local laws and international agreements.
