SANTO DOMINGO – The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) has brought 33 defendants before the country’s courts for violating Law 285-04, on the regulation and control of migration. These defendants include nine Haitian nationals and 24 Dominican nationals. Of these, 16 are accused of engaging in illegal migrant trafficking.

The crimes, reported in March, were discovered by immigration agents and involve 94 undocumented foreigners who were illegally brought into the country.

As a result of the submissions, carried out by the Legal Department of the DGM, the courts imposed 32 coercive measures, consisting of preventive detention (4), prohibition of leaving the country (7), financial guarantee (8), periodic presentation (9) and care and surveillance by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (4). However, there are still 11 of these cases pending consideration by those responsible for administering justice and issuing sentences.

The charges are criminal and, in addition to migrant smuggling, include five cases of forgery, four cases of false document use, two cases of fraud, one case of theft and bribery, one case of criminal conspiracy, and one case of destruction of state property.

These crimes were committed in Santo Domingo Este (6), Jimaní (3), Independencia (2), San Juan de la Maguana (2), Baní (2), and one in Barahona, Elías Piña, Higuey, Dajabón, Bahoruco, Pedernales and the National District.

The discovery of the aforementioned violations and the arrest of those responsible are a result of the DGM’s institutional strengthening and are part of its efforts to ensure compliance with immigration regulations.
