SANTO DOMINGO.- In its efforts to expel illegal immigrants from Dominican territory, the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) apprehended 1,234 Haitian nationals and deported another 1,213 Haitian immigrants.
The operations carried out by immigration interdiction agents took place in Greater Santo Domingo, where 153 undocumented individuals were arrested; 147 in the eastern zone, 64 in La Vega, 63 in Santiago, 25 in Puerto Plata, 17 in Azua, 17 in Montecristi, and 11 in Azua.
Likewise, the Dominican Republic Army captured 519, the Specialized Border Security Corps captured 191, and the National Police captured 27. The DGM also actively collaborated with the Dominican Navy, the Air Force, the Ciutran (National Police), the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Digesett (Digest of the Dominican Republic), among other security agencies.
The groups were detained with respect for their rights and dignity and transferred to the detention centers for undocumented foreigners established by the DGM, where their biometric data and fingerprints were taken, and they were thoroughly cleansed prior to deportation.
They subsequently surrendered to their home nation’s immigration authorities through bilateral border crossings. 774 of them went through Elías Piña, 264 through Dajabón, 97 through Jimaní, and 78 through Pedernales.
With these actions, the DGM not only complies with Law 285-04, which regulates it, but also with the guidelines of the National Defense and Security Council and President Luis Abinader’s mandate to reduce the risks that illegal immigration poses to public order and security, as well as the burden it represents on the country’s economy.
The official entity stated that it will continue its interdiction operations so that all foreigners in the country, regardless of their origin or skin color, are properly documented and registered.
