ESTERO HONDO, Puerto Plata.- The General Directorate of Immigration (DGM) detained 191 Haitian nationals in an irregular situation here, as part of a broad interdiction operation intensified here after learning of the murder of a local rancher.
The illegal aliens, 115 men and 44 women accompanied by 29 minors, were apprehended in a coordinated operation involving members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Police, among other state security agencies.
According to community members, a man of Haitian origin is believed to have killed 85-year-old rancher Bienvenido Acosta, who was found with stab wounds in his home on Orlando Martínez Street in this Municipal District.
Of those arrested, three are presumed to be accomplices in the crime, while the suspected perpetrator is still at large.
The DGM is carrying out interdictory actions in this region, as it is throughout the country, and after learning of this homicide, it intensified them not only to contribute to the discovery of the crime, but also to fulfill its mission of locating and repatriating illegal immigrants.
The detainees were taken to the DGM’s detention center for illegal aliens in Dajabón, where they were registered using a biometric system, their fingerprints taken, and then cleared. Those who demonstrate no conflict with the law during the triage process are handed over to their country’s authorities, following all legal and administrative repatriation procedures.
The DGM warned that interdiction operations will continue to increase in all sectors, as part of immigration policies to strengthen public order and national security.
